Government fully committed to an October election
08-07-2008

The government is fully committed to hold the 2008 presidential elections before 10th October, stated the Minister of Legal Reform, Information and Arts Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking during a press conference held at the Fansavees briefing hall, Nasheed said that the government is even now working towards creating a more conducive environment for campaigning prior to the official declaration of the campaign period.

The new constitution which was passed by the People's Special Majlis (constitutional assembly) on 26 June 2008 was sent to the President on 30 June 2008, for ratification.

Under the constitution the President gets 90 days to ratify the new constitution. The ratification process is running on four tracks and the president is expected to ratify the new constitution soon.

To facilitate a more conducive environment for candidates to campaign before the election, prior to the official declaration of the campaign period for the 2008 Presidential Elections, the Government has already signed an equal access agreement with all registered political parties in giving airtime on state radio and TV.

Furthermore, the Government is working on security arrangements for candidates during the campaign period as well as making public places accessible for candidates to hold their campaign activities.
