Mohamed Nasheed wins the country's first multi party election

Presidential candidate of the MDP Alliance, Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has won the country's first multi party election. Mr. Nasheed who was a former political prisoner managed to secure 54.21% of the run off elections. His contester Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom of the DRP got 45.79 of the votes. There was a 86% turn out for the run off. 209249 people were eligible to vote in the second round and ballot boxes were also kept in UK, Singapore, Malaysia. Sri Lanka and India. After the elections commission announced the result, Gayoom and Mr. Nasheed discussed on ways to run the government peacefully and within legal bounds. They also agreed to bring about the transition of powers as smoothly as possible. Furthermore, President elect Mr. Nasheed also called to the parliament to fix an allowance and a comfortable retreat for Gayyoom. Mr. Nasheed would take over the Presidential office on 11th November.
