Three Media Related Training Programs
22-04-2009

In the month of April 2009, the Department of Information with the help of a Fulbright scholar Ms. Tiare Rath has conducted three media training programs.

The first training program was held from 2 to 5 April on Ethical Decision Making in Journalism. This training program open for private as well as Government media was attended by participants from VTV, TVM, VOM, Minivan Online, Haveeru Daily and Miadhu Daily.

The training program focused on introducing journalists to ethics codes from various countries and international news organizations. The course was a highly practical one which primarily involved discussing ethical scenarios (case studies) that journalists face.

Students were given step-by-step decision-making skills to solve ethical issues. Discussions were held on issues such as the differences between ethics codes and press laws; and how journalists can deal with ethical quandaries such as bias, bribes, conflicts of interest, pressure from sources and privacy for sources.

The course gave participants the opportunity to raise ethical questions they regularly face in their newsrooms, and potential solutions and decision-making skills to help solve these dilemmas.

The second training program was held from 13 to 16 April on the topic of Intermediate Reporting. This training program was also open for private as well as Government media. It was attended by participants from Dhi TV, VTV, TVM, VOM, Minivan Online, Haveeru Daily, Jazeera Daily, the Voice and Miadhu Daily.

The training on Intermediate reporting focused on how to write stronger, non-news leads, how to write features stories and how “human angles” can be applied to news stories.

Trainees learned more advanced reporting skills, such as how to dig deeper in an interview and get sources to reveal more information.

They were also taught the importance of context in a story and practice writing “nut graphs” which are crucial to longer-form journalism. These are also skills which can be used in any media.

The third training program from 20 to 23 April is held for TVM and VOM newscasters on the topic of Ethical Decision Making in Journalism.

Apart from conducting media training programs, the trainer of the above programs, Ms Tiare Rath is currently in Maldives to revise the curriculum for the Journalism Degree program.
