Update: 19/05/2009 - The official results of the parliamentary election was announced with the exception of NO2 Thimarafushi results. Voter turn out was 79 percent. The results are as follow.

13/5/09 :Election commission announced the much awaited provisional results of the 9th May 2009 parliamentary election with no single party securing parliament majority.
The biggest opposition party Dhivehi Rayithunge Party (DRP) took the lead with 28 seats over the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who won 26 seats. The independent candidates won 13 seats and the Peoples Alliance (PA) party took 7 seats. The Dhivehi Gaumee Party (DQP) won 2 seats while Republican Party also took a seat in the new parliament. No party was able to secure the parliament majority.
The arrangements are underway for the new parliament to sworn in before the end of this month. This is the first parliamentary election after the country adopted the new constitution. In contrast to the earlier 52 member parliamentary this parliament will have 77 members. Also the new parliament will not have any appointed members.
