Media Council Deadline extended to 15 March 2010

The deadline to apply for the 7 seats of general members of Maldives Media Council has been extended to 15th March 2007. The decision was announced in the notice (no: DOI-J/2010/004) released by Department of Information on its website today. 

Decision to extend the deadline came because only 7 people applied for the posts. By law the department has to to send 14 names to the vote.

Council Members Formation

According to the article 5 of the Maldives Media Council law the council is elected by a majority vote taken in a meeting organized by the department among news and broadcast media organizations registered in the Department.

The council consists of 8 members from media and 7 members from the public. The names of people competing for 8 media members’ seats will be announced by the media in the above mentioned meeting.
For members of the public the department has to open up invitation to join the media council. From those who apply the department has to select and send 14 names to the above mentioned meeting. From these fourteen names the seven who gets the highest vote will be elected as council members from the public.

Council President and Vice-President

According to the article 11 of the Maldives Media Council law the president and vice-president of the council is elected by a secret vote taken between the members of the council.

Council's Core Duties

To establish, enrich and sustain the freedom of media to the fullest extent according to the law. To create a media that operates responsibly. To create a media that upholds high level of code of ethics and standards that is acceptable to the Maldivian society.
