National Centre for the Arts

Established on 29 December 2005, the National Centre for the Arts functions under the Ministry of Information and Arts. The vision of the National Centre for the Arts is to improve the quality of life of the people by advocating the pursuit of excellence and the practice and enjoyment of the art.

The mission of the National Centre for the Arts is to:

  • Provide the opportunity to pursue artistic knowledge
  • Strengthen human resources in the arts
  • Enhance skills and quality of creative output of artists
  • Revive and develop traditional artistic practices
  • Facilitate the exhibition of artistic talents at national and international levels.
  • Research, document, archive and disseminate information of cultural art forms.

The objectives of the National Centre for the Arts are:

  • To provide equal and affordable opportunities to all individuals, especially the unemployed youth and those without the means of further education, for the attainment of artistic knowledge and skills to facilitate gainful employment.
  • To work towards enhancing the skills and qualities of creative output of artists.
  • To provide the required technical and professional assistance to artists.
  • To ensure that international standards, regulations and conventions are taken into account during the planning and execution of developmental work, so as to enable future students and professionals to be on par with world standards.
  • To facilitate the professional development of artists through exposure at national and international levels, thereby creating possible income-gathering opportunities.
  • To revive the various visual, musical and performance art traditions and further develop them through the provision of affordable and quality education and supportive academic services through the establishment of a School of the Arts.
  • To research, document, archive and disseminate information on cultural and traditional art forms to help preserve the Maldivian culture.
